Creosote-Treated Wood in Aquatic Environments: Technical Review and Use Recommendations
نویسنده
چکیده
In the fall of 2004, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) contracted with Stratus Consulting to conduct an independent, third party review of treated wood utilization in aquatic environments. This review is meant to support developing or updating NMFS guidelines for the use of treated wood along the Pacific Coast of the United States. The contract was awarded for copper-treated wood products and later amended to include a review of creosote-treated products as well. Substantive work on the project was completed in the fall of 2005. These reports are the findings of Stratus Consulting regarding the use of treated wood. They have been subject to peer review and public comment. NMFS may utilize these reports and other available information, as appropriate, to develop or update guidelines on the use of treated wood in aquatic environments. Accordingly, these documents are not NMFS guidelines themselves. 4.1 Sediment total PAH concentrations downstream of newly treated pilings in the Sooke Basin study, as they varied with (a) time and (b) distance

Creosote movement from treated wood immersed in fresh water
Creosote has a long history of successful use as a wood preservative, but polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in this preservative have raised environmental concerns, particularly when creosote-treated wood is used in aquatic environments. A number of models have been developed to predict the risk of creosote use in aquatic environments, but one limitation of these models is a lack of data on the ...
متن کاملEffects of Water Flow Rate and Temperature on Leaching From Creosote-Treated Wood
Creosote has a long history of use as a preservative, particularly in industrial wood products. However, its use has come under increasing scrutiny as a result of concerns about p tential effects on aquatic and terrestrial non-target organisms. Despite the long use of creosote, there is relatively little data on the rates of creosote loss in many exposures, including aquatic applications. To ad...

Environment Canada undertook a preliminary comparative toxicity assessment of selected materials that may be utilized in construction projects located in the aquatic environment. That project involved introducing Fahlstrom sized test stakes (3.9x0.54x26.4 cm) to both fresh and salt water for toxicity testing. Rainbow Trout, Daphnia magna and Microtox testing was conducted in freshwater and Thre...
متن کاملSelection of Preservatives for Marine Structural Timbers in Herring Spawning Areas
Selection of the best method for preserving structural timbers in the marine environmentrequires an assessment of the relative toxicity of preservation methods. Creosote has beenidentified as toxic to herring embryos in a laboratory experiment where the LC50 for hatchingsuccess was reported to be 50 ppb (Vines et al 2000). In the current study, Pacific herringembryos were expose...
